ICDB researcher works with Brazilian scientists of the Butantan Institute

The objetive of the collaboration between both institutions is preparing an alcoholism vaccine in a big scale to start with the pre-clinical trials.

During two weeks, the ICDB researcher, Sergio Mercado, will be working with scientists, post-PhD and students of the well known Butantan Institute of Brazil, with the objetive of finding optimal conditions to transfer our institution’s “know how”.

The work is within the framework of the elaboration of a vaccine against the alcoholism that the ICDB is searching with success. In that way, the contribution of the Butantan has a big relevance if we considerer that this research center is well known to produce numerous vaccines of national and international use such as: diphtheria, tetanus, seasonal influenza, H1N1 flu and others.

This collaboration between both institutions has for objetive to reply in the labs of the Brazilian institute, the work developed in the ICDB in order to be able to produce viral vectors in GMP conditions (Good manufacturing practices). This means, optimal conditions for the safety of medical therapies. In this case, preclinicals and clinical trials are considered in the project.

The specific work of the ICDB researcher consists, in a 1st stage, to establish the cultivation of a specific cellular line to produce adenovirus in bioreactors from 10 to 20 liters. “The idea is go through the methodology designed in our laboratory so in a future they could be responsible for the production in a big scale with GMP conditions” Sergio Mercado said. And added: “The collaboration that we make with the Butantan Institute is vital to the project's success. If we are able to generate vectors in GMP conditions then we can start with the preclinical trials”.

The Butantan Institute

This institute in one the biggest center of biomedical researchers of the world, that represent more than 93% of the serum and vaccines produced in Brazil, as: diphtheria, tetanus, seasonal influenza, H1N1 flu and others.

The Institute carries out basic research, biologic and biomedical studies related, directly or indirectly to the public health.

Likewise, they have Scientific missions in the same country and also abroad through the WHO (OMS), PAHO (OPS), UNICEF and ONU. Also collaborates in the fight against epidemics outbreaks with Health Department and the Health Ministry of Brazil, the National Health Institute of USA, and others.
